Winter Garden home burns down after reported lightning strike, officials say

A Winter Garden home burned down Thursday afternoon after multiple lightning strikes were reported in the area, according to Orange County Fire Rescue.

First responders from OCFR and the Winter Garden Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. as the house on the 12000 block of Butler Bay Court was engulfed in flames.

No one was inside the 5,000-square-foot home and no injuries were reported, officials said. The building, however, was a total loss.

A 911 caller reported seeing lightning and heavy smoke around the time of the fire, and crews arriving at the scene noticed flames coming from the backside of the house, OCFR said.

By 7:16 p.m., crews were able to put out the fire and were monitoring the scene for flare-ups.
